This was free last Friday. I think they finally caught on the coffee because this week there were no more out of date and there was a huge empty spot on the shelf. I finally managed some produce. Celery with peanut butter cups. Yum! And another canister of Nuttrition nuts. This is helping my budget so much!

More free at HEB. I estimate this cost just shy of $30. The sausages alone was $6-$7. The nuts and jelly were about $5 each. I do wish these items were included in the "You saved..." part of the receipt. All I get is a receipt full of zeros. Wow. That's kinda cool to say. I have a receipt that states I legitimately took these items out of the store for free.

 Seriously?  They left the expired rice and chicken broth on the 

shelf long enough for me to get another one for free?

I think my home store is cracking down now that someone is using the guarantee. Good for them! Bad for me lol. Seriously, I'm glad it's more difficult to find expired stuff, especially stuff expired for more than a year. That's just dangerous! A few days is one thing. A year and a half is another. That being said, they still had plenty of Luzianne mix and Central Market Organic Chicken Broth on the shelf. The yogurt and ground turkey was only a few days expired but it was still expired. We're almost eating better than we did on coupons alone!

They keep leaving out of date items on the shelves at my home store. Well, I'll take them up on their offer! Yesterday, yes on the holiday, I got some ground beef and turkey both expired on the 1st and 2nd. I also found some pouches of Minute Maid expired April 2010. Score! The drinks were great for the kids at the 4th of July picnic of went to. Used the ground meat to make stuffed green peppers with some peppers from Froberg's Farm for a super cheap meal costing less than $3 to feed 2 adults, 1 child, and leftovers for 1 adult lunch, so 4 servings. Awesome!

I think we're set on coffee for a good, long while.

I went to a different store this time-a newer, larger one in a more affluent community. Spent about 1 1/2 hours looking at dates. Well I tell ya what, this one is on top of the game! I wanted some chips to go with the Wholly Guacamole from earlier and I wanted to treat my men with ice cream. Since my massage place is literally right behind the HEB in the same strip mall, I figured why not check there. Found some chips out of date with no in date replacements. They wouldn't let me sub the same company's chips in the same size with the same price but different flavor. Oh well. It was worth a shot. I also couldn't get another pack of Irish Cream hot chocolate like I got last week for the same reason. Can you believe that 2 entire cases were still on the shelf dated from March? I did manage to find another huge canister of coffee out of date since March 2010 and some Planter's nuts. I've been wanting to try these for a while but they're just so dang expensive! Woo hoo! These will be great on our outing to Schlitterbahn next month.

Yup went back to date scan for more items. I found a bunch of stuff! They wouldn't allow the bacon though because they didn't have any more of that one in stock. They wouldn't allow a substitution. :( This time I watched the numbers on the checkout and this stuff would've been over $20! I got Wholly Guacamole, Luzianne Dirty Rice, Cafe Ole Bavarian Hazelnut coffee, Cafe Ole Cinnamon Hazelnut coffee, HEB Breakfast Blend coffee, Central Market Organics Free Range Chicken Broth, and Central Market Organics Lightly Salted Popcorn. Wow! I'm definitely gonna do even more shopping at HEB.



On one hand this totally squicks me out because look at all the expired products on the shelves. The coffee was from last July. Ew. While I know some products are still good past their expiration date, shouldn't they be watching closer? It was all.over.the.store. I worked in grocery for 2 years and this would've been considered unacceptable in 1993! 



On the other hand I'm tired of reading on the bulletin boards how store managers are getting sick of customers abusing the policy. Um, get the out of date products off the shelves before someone gets sick, have your stockers do their job instead of your customers, and then we'll talk. I found all this in 1 hour with a 4yo while also looking for items I was paying for. Get it together instead of accusing your customers of abuse.

All I did was use their Fresh or Free Guarantee. At HEB, if you find something out of date you can get one item in date for free. I was there 1 1/2 hours and also bought about $30 worth of stuff we needed at home. I think I did pretty well considering. I'm glad I heard about this. I'm definitely going to use this more often!

HEB trip 2/20/2010 - saved 39% - 93.08 before coupons, $50.66 after

Ok, here's the dealio guys, I'm way behind. Like I said before, Mr. Newbie hurt himself at work and has been home all week on work comp. Although we need the money, it's been awesome having him here at home with us instead of working 10-14 hour days. I've been taking advantage of this by us spending time as a family. We've been cuddling on the couch watching TV or running back and forth to take him to the doc since he couldn't drive last weekend. Sorry, but family takes precedence over my blog (besides, my LJ, Facebook and Twitter can all be updated by text message while this blog can't).

Still, I had to do some grocery shopping - alone! He's been staying home with the kidlet while I ran around. Yes, I've been running around during the day and it feels great! So great that I'm going to continue doing so.... since he finally bought his "Dave Ramsey" car this week too! :)

On to the deal I did at HEB. I don't normally shop at HEB. I did before I used coupons because I always forgot to bring them with me and they have the yellow tags in store. Once I discovered how much I could save, I ditched HEB in favor of Kroger since I save so much more there - not to mention the $0.10 credit per gallon of gas I get to save just for scanning my Kroger loyalty card and spending $100 before coupons and discounts. I decided I wanted to do the HEB meal deal. If you buy 2 pounds of either catfish or tilapia you got a number of items free. I also wanted to get Mr. Newbie some Pop-Tarts and they had a decent deal there. Oh, and the biggest reason I wanted to go was the Butterball Turkey Bacon on sale for $1.00 each and I had $0.75 off coupons, so $0.25 turkey bacon! Here's the picture:

HEB is great on having in-store coupons and buy x get y free sales. Thing is, the in-store coupons are manufacturer coupons and can't be combined with other paper coupons. It's not a bad haul, just not the greatest. The bagger wasn't the greatest either. I finally got my free cooler bag and he put all the produce in there, leaving the meat in regular bags. In Houston. On a warm night. Geez.

I was really wanting some Chicken Kiev the other day and I knew I could get Barber Chicken brands at HEB. They were ON SALE!!!! I also had a COUPON (at least for 1 of them). What they don't know is that I would've paid full price for this "treat."

Nectarines on sale for $1.00 per pound. Paid $1.28
International Delight Sugar Free Hazelnut creamer (cost the same as the other creamer with a coupon and was in the flavor I wanted) $2.29
